I wonder if you can help me find a story I read over 40 years ago?
It's an American folktale I found in an anthology years ago. It concerns a mountain girl who is considered a local beauty and a sweetheart-which she is not! She is a born coquette and is being courted by two men who don't know about each other. There is a final show down when the two find out about each other and face each other with dueling pistols. They realize they have been tricked and shoot. Each other? No, it's the girl they shoot.
I'm partly quoting some of the lines from memory when I used to read the story to my classes, but that's the best I can do. I've been searching for it for years in anthologies, all to no avail. The problem is I have no recollection of the title or author.
