need author: I shall not pass

I Shall Not Pass This Way Again

Through this toilsome world, alas!
Once and only once I pass;
If a kindness I may show,
If a good deed I may do
To a suffering fellow man,
Let me do it while I can.
No delay for it is plain
I shall not pass this way again.

Thanks,

Steve

According to , it's 'author unknown.'

A good way of finding these is to go to , and type or copy a phrase into 'Advanced Search- with the exact phrase.' Warning, this only works if you've remembered the line correctly.

I expect to pass through life but once.
If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show,
or any good thing I can do for any fellow being,
let me do it now... as I shall not pass this way again.

British religious leader William Penn (1644-1718)

Aargh! I answered this one on the Poetry Library lost quotations board some time ago, and had researched it quite thoroughly - now I can't find it, and have a horrible feeling that PL have done away with their archive!
(Exit left, sobbing.)

I work in a nursing home and a little old lady would recite a poem to me once or twice a week and the last line of each verse was I shall (or will) pass this way but once. The lady passed away and I am trying to find the poem to pass on to her family. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks- Glenna

Steve,
Is there more verses to this poem? I have been searching for a poem similar to this, but I have forgotten most of the words. A little old lady in a nursing home would recite the poem to me once or twice a week. She passed away and I would love to give a copy of this poem to her family. This was about all she could remember. Did not know what day it was, but could recite this poem.
Thanks,Glenna
