Unknown Title & Author, "If you love something, set it free..."

I'm pretty sure this is how the body goes, I really like and would appreciate any help in finding it so I can make a copy the original. Would be nice to know the title & who the author is since I like it so well, too! Thanks to anyone who can help or point me in the right direction to do so.
here's the body text... oh I'm not even sure if it's classified as a quote or as a poem? Quote I think?

"If you love something, set it free, if it comes back, it's your's forever, if not it was never your's to begin with."

That's it, thanks again in advance.

it is said to be an ancient Chinese proverb - but I doubt it
- many authors, many versions ...
.
If you love something, set it free.
If it comes back to you, it's yours.
If it doesn't, it never was.
.
If you love something, set it free.
If it comes back to you, it is yours.
If it does not, it was never meant to be.

Another song - What's the Use of Wings by Brian Bedford of Artisan

Why do people cage the things they love the most?
Is it simply that they fear to be alone?
If you give your love its freedom, it will stay awhile,
If it leaves you, it was never yours to own.
