Just had word on the new site www.mypoetry.net, the Mule is under new owners who aren't interested in poetry. The new site belongs to Kevin who was one of the founders of the Mule.

Nothing much is happening over there yet, but we could build it up for him.

Maricey, posting your question in a thread called 'New Poetry Site' isn't likely to catch the attention of a helper. You would have a better chance of getting a useful response if

(a) you created a new thread for your question, and gave it a name mentioning the poem or the poet; and

(b) gave some information about yourself and your educational level and about your homework task, and showed willingness to put in a little effort and thought of your own.

The flip answer to your question "what do I ... respond to..." is that it appears to be a question about you personally. What do you respond to in the poem? Well, tell us. There's no right or wrong response to a poem. You just have to express your own response, and do so honestly. If there's something in the poem you don't understand, say so. If there's something about it you like or dislike, say so, and try to say why. Does the poem evoke for you any images or feelings or ideas? What appears to you to be the author's intention in writing it? If you post your thoughts on such points, at least you may start a discussion going, and you may find other people's viewpoints helpful.

As for analysis, there are many different approaches possible, ranging from an enlightened overview and appreciation at one end of the scale to a tediously mechanical inventory of the nuts and bolts of the poem at the other. You can't expect Emulers to guess what kind of analysis your teacher wants you to make. How about telling us? Do you have any course notes to guide you?

Ian
