Essay help - Portait of the artist as a young man

I have recieved an assesment task on the novel "Portrait of the artist as a young man" By James Joyce

The task specification is to explore the influences of the main character. How the forces and influences guide the behaviour of the main character.

I also need to comment on the techniques used by the author James Joyce.

If anyone could give me some tips, that would be much appreciated.

I never liked that book. I don't care much for Joyce.
