I have an assignment to read a couple poems and understand metaphors in the poem and why the aurthor choose them. I need help. I dont understand poetry.
Desi, please avoid giving a generic title to any thread, because it will come up on EVERY search.
Angel, do you have a teacher? If so ask them, what time period, what country's poets, what framework they would like you to use If you don't have a teacher, just pick two poems from our archives?
Les
Don't think about metaphors as poetry. You probably use metaphors all the time. Poets steal them from "real life".
merriam-webster says a metaphor is:
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money).
If you can suggest a poem or a couple of poems you like (have a stroll through the archives; see classical poetry list on top), we can try to help find the metaphors.
Les, I gave it the title the person in question chose. I'm always afraid the email doesn't reach the person and he or she will be unable to find the query. We can always change it later after signs of life.
Could I have your email address by the way for this kind of conversations? Mine is in my profile.
Speaking is walking - Poetry is dancing. We understand poetry before we are educated to believe that is is difficult. Poetry is playing with language - children learn to talk by playing with sounds. Then some paid educator comes along and says 'poetry is difficult - poetry needs to be explained - '
Poetry is the sound of a football crowd roaring its delight at a goal - poetry is rap - its the latest and coolest advertising jingle - that you just cant help humming on your way to school/work/ ???
Find something you can relate to - try and find out about the writer - how he/she felt about God / life and the movies. Read the words and look for patterns - think about sound - rhythm -
Then write down your ideas and come back
