Ok We studied this poem in class. Its always misinterpreted. Frost didn't write this poem meaning that he was so individual, and that he changed his life ... He wrote this poem about a friend of his. This friend of his could never make decisions in life about anything. "Yet, Knowing how way leads onto way, I doubted if I should ever come back." The point of view of this poem is of his friend. In this whole poem he's (the friend) deciding which road to take but he can't make a decision. "I Shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence, Two roads diverged in a wood, And I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." This is the one qoute that people always take out of context, Frost is in no way saying that he made this great decision and that in his life journey this one decision changed his life. This quote is comepletely ironic, Frost is making fun of his friend because this one decision of deciding which road to take will in no way affect your life, and Frost's friend will not remember this one choice he made. Thats the irony of this poem, Frost is just making fun of his friend for never being able to make meaningless decisions.

Right, Edward Thomas. I read that too, but Frost was certainly not above leading us astray and cackling about our subsequent missteps.

Would he object to readers making different interpretations? I suspect he would revel in it.

our teacher said not to mention it too much but that the poem was probably frosts speculation about his own life decisions, he changed his career path later in life like not many people then did (less traveled by)

the mood depends on how you read it, it can be regretful, or show satisfaction in his final decision

I am 13 years old and read this poem long ago at the beginning of the year in langauge arts. This poem, like all poems, has many meanings. My interpritation of this poem is that he was stuck making a desicion and when he took the one that was used long ago, but then used no more, he was taking the harder way in life. He was choosing to get more out of the deal by learning things, and putting effort into his choices, instead of just taking the easy way out and taking the new road much easier, but was just as long.
-You must understand there is no right or wrong answer in interpritating poetry no matter how out there your answer is.-

i know this is a bit late but the road not taken has a literal and a metaphoric meaning. it a person stuck between the crossroads of life and cannot decide an option that will influence his life. one path is used by many probably meaning a career or something and the other is hardly used. in the end he chooses the path that is not so well used and finds out in the end that he has made the right choice. the literal meaning is fairly straightforward. it is the same person probably in a wood and sees two pathways. one is used by many people and the other isn't. he chooses the underused and overgrown path and even though there are many difficulties getting through, the right choice was made in the end. also, i have found that religion can play a part in this poem as a choice is made between heaven and hell. many people opt for the easy way and end up in hell and the others struggle through life and make it to heaven. thats all i have to say. thats what i can see from an A level student's perspective. hope i was of some help.

I have been experiencing diffulculty discovering the name of the Rhyme Scheme ABAAB. However, on a differing note I would like to put forward my own thoughts pertaining to the metaphoric and symbolic natures of the poem in question. I have philosified that the road is something of a literary plot structure. The commencement of the road obviously symbolizes the birth of decision making on the part of the narrorator. Therefore, the central road, swerving among the forks but easily seen, is the parallel of Frost's Life. The paths are clearly the two choices being made. I do agree with a previous author that the YELLOW wood is a symbol of age. Also, I was writing a paper on this poem for my older brother Robert who is in 10th grade, and he had no clue on what " one traveler " meant. Consequently I told the idiotic boy that the author wishes to be two people, not making the decision before him. Sadly he is only person and must make a choice. Naturally the SCRANTON HIGH student is the bane of my academic existence but I am still alive. If anyone knows anything concerning the rhyme scheme PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!! Glad to be of help(?)!!!!
