Hey, i have read this poem and think i'm on the right track to interpretation, but I'm trying to figure out how the structure of this poem ties in its meaning and ideas.
One face looks out from all his canvasses,
One selfsame figure sits or walks or leans;
We found her hidden just behind those screens,
That mirror gave back all her loveliness.
A queen in opal or in ruby dress,
A nameless girl in freshest summer greens,
A saint, an angel - every canvass means
The same one meaning, neither more nor less.
He feeds upon her face by day and night,
And she with true kind eyes looks back on him
Fair as the moon and joyful as the light;
Not wan with waiting, not with sorrow dim;
Not as she is, but was when hope shone bright;
Not as she is, but as she fills his dream.
I think this poem in about an artist whom is painting a portrait of a beautiful woman whom he admires. He stares at this painting day and night trying to get the painting perfect and "eyes looks back on him" meaning the painting of the lady looked back at him. When he finished the painting of the lady, his dream is fulfilled (that the painting is finished and he will always have is piece of art to remind him of the lady). I'm not sure i'm on the right track. If you can lead me on the right track I would truly appreciate it.
Thanks.
To add to what i have mentioned above, how dues the structure relate to it's ideas and themes.
If anyone can clarify the interpretation and explain how the structure relates to the ideas and theme of the poem i would love the help.
I'm not sure how to start this assignment.
Thanks
Casey
It's a sonnet. Sonnets are traditionally love poems. It also uses a lot of anaphora, where words are repeated from one line to the next, but I am not sure how that improves the structure, personally. I suppose you could also search for 'love' sounds, such as a preponderance of Ls, Ms, Ns for consonants and soft vowels, but the sonnet answer is probably what the instructor is looking for. Just guessing, right.
