Into My Own

ONE of my wishes is that those dark trees,
So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze,
Were not, as ’twere, the merest mask of gloom,
But stretched away unto the edge of doom.

I should not be withheld but that some day 5
Into their vastness I should steal away,
Fearless of ever finding open land,
Or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand.

I do not see why I should e’er turn back,
Or those should not set forth upon my track 10
To overtake me, who should miss me here
And long to know if still I held them dear.

They would not find me changed from him they knew—
Only more sure of all I thought was true.

=======

difficult assignement. The book is called "a boy's will" and the poem starts with "one of my wishes", so it is safe to assume this poem indicates one of his wishes for when he dies (his last will and testament). So, what is the wish?

ONE of my wishes is that those dark trees
....
were
... stretched away unto the edge of doom.

doom meaning what? Afterlife? Practically, he wants the trees over his grave (I assume) to stretch on and on. Why?

The next paragraph answers this: so that he can keep on walking without fear of leaving the forest.

The final two paragraphs state that he does not see why people who are looking for him would not be able to find him if he would return. They would recognise him, as he didn't change, but only more sure of the things he knew.

Does this help?

Sounds like the boy wants to run away and hide where no one can ever find him.
