Shakespeare Sonnets

I love and totally understand Shakespeare's sonnets, but my prof has given me such a weird essay question that I'm totally lost!
The topic is 'love and politics in Shakespeare sonnets'...I am confused with the politics aspect! Could it be Shakespeare's possible homosexuality revealed in the sonnets and the politics - reaction - of this 'revelation' to the society?

The topic is 'love and politics in Shakespeare sonnets'

Yes, confusing to me as well. Such a discussion in, say, Julius Caesar or even Hamlet would make more sense. But in the sonnets, the characters are only a young nobleman, a dark lady and a rival poet (if memory serves). Perhaps urging the young nobleman to have children might have some political purpose, but it seems a stretch. Is the competition with the dark lady or another poet political? Doesn't seem so, no.
