Start by reading the poem over several times- out loud is best. Check out any words that confuse you. ('Vair' means variegated or mixed)

Think about- who is speaking? who is she/he speaking to? what is the reason for this poem? Is the speaker happy, sad, angry? Note these things down.

Next, try and paraphrase the poem- what if you only had a couple of sentences to say this- what does the poem MEAN?

Now look at the poem's structure- what kind of rhyme scheme does it have? Is it a particular kind of poem, like a sonnet or a limerick? What is the metric scheme? Now, what do these things do for the poem? Do they make it harder, easier? Why did the poet choose certain words or phrases? What does that do for your understanding.

Hopefully, you've now got lots of bits of information on your poem, and can start assembling it into an analysis. I would start with the general meaning of the poem, who is speaking/why, and then go into structure and what that does or doesn't do for your understanding.

That was very helpful advice from Pam.

The only point on which I disagree is the meaning of 'vair'. My 'Shorter Oxford' dictionary says it's a noun meaning 'fur obtained from a variety of red squirrel with grey back and white belly, much used in the 13th and 14th centuries as a trimming or lining for garments'.

Am I the only one who finds obrigado remarkably similar to domo arigato? Of course I am, never mind. Gomen Nasai.

I know that Obrigado meant thanks but what the hell is domo arigato? I have heard it with Mr.Roboto in the same context though... man I'm lost...
