The poetry of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, and Countee Cullen will give you a first start. (Yes, I know there are other ethnic minorities, but I'm working off the top of my head here)

Incident

Once riding in old Baltimore,
Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
Keep looking straight at me.
Now I was eight and very small,
And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."

I saw the whole of Baltimore
From May until December;
Of all the things that happened there
That's all that I remember.

-- Countee Cullen

Green Light and Gamma Ways

Miss Liberty is green -
the horizon and sky
plus yellow, skin.

She is a minority too;
colour of ridiculous Martian people,
and NOT a man.

Handicapped,
disabled;
another immigrant.

Dorothy Parker

Unfortunate Coincidence

By the time you swear you're his,
Shivering and signing,
And he vows his passion is
Infinite, undying--
Lady, make a note of this:
One of you is lying.

what do you need help with? Something to do with Emily Dickenson? Also, if you are, have you come across any of her poems that have to do with minority type things? and I forgot to add "religious minority" to my list up top...lol.

UMMM..IM wondering if any one can help me really quick.

i have to write a literary analysis essay on flanders fields. the thing is that im not very good at taking the poem apart. so if you can tell me anything that you notice about the poem i would be very greatful (ie: metaphore, meter, imagery, etc...)

heres the poem and thanks

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

How about Colin McNaughton's "Why are the kids at school so mean?" from his book Whose Been Sleeping In My Porridge?, 1990, Walker Books, so its in copywrite.

Why are the kids so mean at school?
Why do they call me eight eyed ghoul?
Why are the kids at school so cheeky?
Why do they call me weird and freaky?

(4 more verses)

I know I'm different, well, big deal;
That doesn't mean that Idon't feel!
I can't work out the human race -
I'm just a kid from outer space.

I don't know if this will really help...but the imagery is good:
a. the larks flying, and singing bravely, maybe oblivious to their surroundings?
b. the sunset glowing at dawn
c. poppies continuing the cycle of life while everything is dying off during the war? maybe?
I don't know... not much metaphors...no similies or irony... and i'm bad at meter...
hope I've helped!

Hi! Does anyone know of a SONNET that talks about Ethnicity, minority, stereotypes, racism, discrimination...things of that likes?

What about poems from countries such as Russia, Germany, Spain, Poland, Austria, Netherlands, and other European countries EXCEPT England?

What about poems from Ancient Greek and Rome? Especially the Odyssey and the works of Ovid? Like Ovid after he was exiled?

THANKS!!

And thanks Skip and others who've contributed!
and if you can, also assist my friends who are working on THEIR projects...amanda, Matt MAtthews, and Clayton Cook are some...
