Hello,
I was hoping that I could appeal to the poetry lovers on this board to tell me what they think of poetry and what it means to them. Specifically, what have you learned from studying poetry? It could be something academic or personal. Describe the journey you have embarked on studying poetry.
Thanks to any and all who can help me.
Mark
Mark, I think you probably need to break this down by category like this:
specifically what have you learned from poetry
1. Academically: I've learned about meter and rhyme and how syllables form rhythm in poetry.
2. Emotionally: I've learned how to express feelings in a way that evokes an emotional response from others.
3. Philosophically: I've learned how to see the world as others see it, by reading poems I can imagine the world from others' perspectives.
Describe the journey you have embarked on studying poetry
For some of us poetry is life: it is art, it is expression, but it is also entertainment, learning and wisdom. It can be academic, but it can also be fun. It can be an emotional release, or an escape from reality.
It can also be a way of focusing on challenges which are real. In this manner it can also help us cope with reality, and provide solutions to problems we face.
It can give us insight into humanity. In this respect, it can make us better able to cope with the world, with society and our neighbors. Free expression allows us to react in real time to the challenges which face our society, and mankind throughout the world.
I hope this gives you some idea of the scope of the subject, Mark. For more insight into how poets themselves see their work go here:

poetry is an amazing way to express your feelings, in a rythmik way that flows. it is transforming the normal english language into stanzaz that are creative and get the reader to fell exactly what you do. If you word the poem correctly you should b able to make the reader understand and go along with what your poem is and is meant to be saying. poetry is saying something in a more meaningful, creative and rythmik way.
Poetry is a not so intense form of art that can flow, or not, according to the way the poet wants to express themselves.
But poetry is just that: self-expression, of any feeling or thought that happens to come to mind, or has been looming over the poet forever. Poetry is a way to express thoughts and feeling in an artistic form that might not be possible in other means.
On a personal level, I have learned to look for many meanings in other's language and symbolism, along with my life.
I can then respond or just express what I want through the same medium.
POETRY IS LIKE UM HI YAH I JUSS WANNA BE ON THIS THING SO YAH BYE
