Here is a possible method of approaching this assignment.

Find two poems, one by an American, the other by a Brit, which illustrate the theme.

Then use the examples that they cite to illustrate the point that violence is/is not common in both societies.

By doing an Ask Jeeves search for: "Violence in poetry?" you should get some responses.
