If any of you people could help me out with this interpretation, I would greatly appreciate it!!

'Regret' by Richard Le Gallienne

One asked of regret,
And I made reply:
To have held the bird,
And let it fly;
To have seen the star
For a moment nigh,
And lost it
Through a slothful eye;
To have plucked the flower
And cast it by;
To have one only hope—
To die.

The speaker seems to feel that she has thrown everything away-- it's not that the good things weren't in life, but that she couldn't be bothered to hang on to them.

I'm not so sure she deliberately threw things away as much as she naively missed the importance at the time.
