Living For Today

      Living For Today<br />

I do not yearn for yesterday,
And I do not seek tomorrow.
Sufficient is this day of life
Whether filled with joy or sorrow.

Yesterday’s gone and won't return,
What good is living in the past?
Mistakes made in the here and now
Will surely hunt us down at last.

Tomorrow, on the other hand,
From today will seek to borrow.
Yet each and all of our today’s
Are but yesterday’s tomorrows.

J.H.,
I enjoyed this one. With the events of the world;
the war, unrest, crime, diseases with no cure, etc.
we must all appreciate"today".
I love the line's
"Tomorrow, on the other hand,
From today will seek to borrow."
Nice job,
Anthony

Love this, JH! It reminds me of a poem by Countee Cullen... what was it called?? I can't remember just now... I love philosophical poems that involve looking back. This is an excellent one too.

Anthony, I'm glad you liked it, thanks for responding. You are quite right about world events.

bobo, thank you bobo. I hope you are feeling better. I could'nt find the C. Cullen poem so post a title if you remember it.

This is a good J. H., focusing on the present keeps our feet planted on the ground. Sometimes we miss the opportunity for success by lamenting the past, or running after that rainbow's end.

How true, how true. I watch the events of the world and I think about tomorrow. Absolutely touching.

Wow, I really enjoyed this poem. I must of read it five times. Not for misunderstandings, rather for it's flow and powerfully written words. Great Job.

Les, Thanks Les, your words are always appreciated as well as your outlook on life.

Keeper, Thanks for reading and for your thoughts.

John, Glad you liked it John.

Ell, It is always good hearing from you. I got the idea for this one from the poem Remembrance by Robert Southey. It has been a favorite of mine for years.

To Hughesy,

Why read poetry? Obviously you don't like it. Write something brilliant and I will gladly change my mind.

Nice work! I love it.
You are right, I guess many of us tend to live in the past and let the present slip by us.

Angelica, Thanks for reading and commenting on the poem, and seriously, don't fall into the trap of trying to reason with unreasonable people. They show up from time to time and try to cause a stir, but it is best to just ignore them. jhs

Nice bump, Les. Haven't heard from John for quite awhile. He mentioned that he had some health problems a few years back. I hope all is well with him.
