he was not especially precocious as a poet

he was not especially precocious as a poet

1
precocious, ferocious fruits
mental aptitude disavowed
with sticky fingers

through the laziness of the elders
keeping to a straight line
impossible before coffee in the morning

foresaking addiction
to favorite authors
for ungraspable words

2
daylight to lamp's light
in turning my head

sans pointing without accents
or cadence

horses in the twilight
dismissed as vague imaginings

3
turning away from reference
and citation

but playing with words
is that the thing

exceptionally early development
or maturity

or an especially arrested development
lasting well into senility

4
which would you prefer
because I didn't know the word

Thanks, Les. I like the sounds of it.
