In a Haystack

I move the items on the end table
one inch from where they've been
for more than a week.

The twenty year old camera
with its door open
for the broken clasp...

Two gallon-sized
zip locked bags
half filled with candy
from my son's wedding...

lemon drops and
black licorice....

Scraps of yarn pieces
trimmed from the
afghan I'm crocheting
for Christmas...

A pair of haircutting scissors...
not really a tool of the trade,
but they cut the yarn
just the same.

A piece of paper
with notes to remind myself
where I left off....
beneath the magazine that
I've been meaning to read.

I pick these things up mindlessly
and set them back down,
one by one,
like a dumbstruck girl
twirling her hair...
Deep in circular thought
about how everything
seems to remain the same...
unmoved. unchanged.
In disarray.

I'm stuck in a pattern
of clutter and reduced to
this granny square
life.

I look down at the table
and there, glistening
under the lamp's light...
winking up at me
like a silver tooth,
is the yarn needle
I had misplaced
more than a week ago.

It had been in my hand
one minute...
then gone
in the next.

It had brought me
to my feet
and to my knees
to scan the floor
and comb the chair
with gnashed teeth urgency.

Just where does
everything I once had
go when I need it
the most?

What cruel tricks
get played over
and over
again?

But here it is now,
laid bare on the table
in all its naked glory...

When I had all but
resigned myself
to its loss.

Ahh, the joy of reclaiming something that was lost. I hope the needle is a metaphor for something more important in your life.

I think this one is golden, Mary. Anyone on the downside of 50 can really appreciate all the details here.

Yes, unfortunately time takes it toll on all people in varying degrees. What you've written here is just the tip of the iceberg for some of us oldsters. But as long as we can laugh about it, I guess we're all right.

I do like the way you've captured the spirit of the feeling.

Les

p.s. One doesn't have to be a senior to have senior moments. While attending college I recall having to carry an extra key to my car in my wallet because I had locked my keys in the vehicle so many times AAA would no longer help me without charging me an extra $50.

I've been having "senior moments" all my life, Les. I'm pretty sure my son came by his ADD diagnosis very naturally... through DNA. It definitely does take its toll and we have to come up with ways to compensate for it the best we can. Getting older is helpful because at least we then have something we can blame it on lol.

Les, I replied to an e-mail I received from you that appeared to be spam a few days ago that looked like it was also sent to frosty and some other e-mail addresses that look like familiar names (including rgilmer), but no reply. Today I received another one from you with a link to something "grisly" that my computer wouldn't let me open because it was noted to be harmful. Do you know what is going on with that? I've never taken you out of my contact list over the years and it definitely comes up with your e-mail address as the sender.

Mary, it's spam, if I care to contact anyone on e-mule I use the "private message" feature of this website.

Do not open any e-mails from anyone here on the website. They may contain viruses. Also, you should probably change your password, just in case someone is using the e-mail addresses from this website to "phish" for information in your e-mail account.

Wow...it's too bad that something can't be done because it certainly doesn't encourage people to visit. I can try changing my password, but it seems to me the last time I did that, I was locked out. I guess that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, considering. And I guess it did no good setting my e-mail preference as "hidden" or "private". Doesn't it bug you that your e-mail address is being used in the phishing scheme? It would me.

Oh well. I probably shouldn't have stopped back. Hopefully nothing serious will result from having visited. Thanks for the info, Les.

Mary, if you are seriously worried about this scam, or others. Open a new
e-mail account with a new password.

As for myself, nothing that has happened since the new owners have taken over, surprises me. I believe that the new owners use this site to scam clients. So why am I still here. I like reading the poetry.

Be well, and be careful.

Les
