I watch the papers everyday
...before the cynic falls asleep.
...before my memory began to fade.
...which darkness do you prefer to hide in?
When Heraclitus is said to say
“Human nature is not rational;
there is intelligence only
in what encompasses him.”
He is saying the world
can be found to be orderly
in some way
but not the affairs of mankind.
I watch the papers everyday
for a sign of that orderliness
from the east coast of Japan
to the straits among the ice cliffs
and end in the sad laughter
before the cynic falls asleep.
Today’s the first Monday
after Aquarius; I was born
on a Friday as Sagittarius
rode toward Capricorn
before my memory began to fade.
We’re on the clock
and lost in ourselves
from the Taliban to Tiburon
wading through the mountains
or waiting for the ocean
to take us forward
or take us back to the womb...
which darkness do you prefer to hide in?
