In the distance stands the scarecrow by night
Silent, screaming mouth agape with fright
Old, wooden fence supports his crucifixtion stance
Arms spread wide while in the breeze his fingers gently dance
Knees buckled under from the weight of the hate
Crimson tears streaming so fast seal his fate
The wind shrieks a banshee wail
As the scarecrow stills to ghostly pale
Crows screeches deafening, take to flight
Sick and frightened by the scarecrow by night
A poem in memory of Matthew Shepard
This is my first post. Needless to say I am little apprehensive. I read so many beautiful
poems that were of some length, so I thought I would start with a shorter poem. Just to get a feel of the board. Thanks for any comments! Andy
Very nicely done Andy,
I especially liked the portrayal of the scarecrow being crucified, it really pulls you in.
I can see a few places where there is room for improvement, but nothing serious.

Matthew Shepard was a young man murdered by what we in England call, graphically, "queer-bashers". One of many who have died because of their sexuality. There is so much hatred of homosexuals in the world, it shames me. Your poem is a strong tribute: thankyou.
Good rhyme scheme: you might want to experiment with more complexity of rhyme and metre, just to see how it feels.
Good alliteration: I would beware of repetition in alliteration, so I would not have used the second and third "scarecrow" - they detract from the effect.
Punctuation: not everyone likes it round here but I do. You could try it.
But, not bad mate!
