Memories

A man sat on the porch
with a puzzle book in his hand,
The screen door snaps open
and she joins him,
seeking out her man,

Their voices blend so sweetly
as the speak about the day,
they very much enjoy their time
and the things they like to say,

Unbidden, his tears appear so freely
upon his rugged face,
they simply flow upon the tracks
at a very even pace,

Her tears build up so quickly
but yet they do not start,
there is no where you can see them
as they flow within her heart,

The silence wraps them slowly,
a smile will reach their eyes,
the love of a child
they held so briefly,
his memories will arise.

I wrote this poem for my brother and sister-in-law after the loss of their
great grandchild that they raised for 4 years. He was born with a heart
defect--had a transplant when he was almost a year old---and he grew
into this child with such a zest for life--he never slept for more than two hours at a time--because he crammed as much as he could into his short time--he was a delight and he took time to feel the wind--they were heartbroken but yet their lives will never be the same because they had him...

1green, The poem is wonderful and moving. I'm so sorry for the circumstances but am happy that you could write it. I especially liked the line "there is no where you can see them as they flow within her heart." jhs

There is nothing more tragic than the death of a child. Very moving poem. JP

Some of the most beautiful thoughts are expressed in poetry, and sadly some of those thoughts are of death. It is best handled poeticly. Which you have done.

One of my favorittes conains the stanza

"My mother bowed her head and wept,
Both my arms fell to my side,
God knows I knew that she had died,
And there all white my sister slept"

I hope there is a religious faith in your brothers family.

Terry
