Here is a site which promotes a very low calorie, high interest alternative to the candy routine:

Great, they'll be throwing non-metaphorical eggs at my house then !

Personally, I would support giving out trading cards...maybe along the lines of Wacky packages but with a Literary theme.

Gross stuff that kids like...Odor of a Grecian Urn

My son says popcorn, jellybeans, catsup, and candy corn are vegetables.
Likewise lemonade, corn dogs, and banana flips are fruit.
Everybody knows that marshmallow peeps are poultry.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and BUTTER
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love LUCY to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for JIVE
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I CLAUDIUS with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to BE GAINING WEIGHT

With my lost saints, ? I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! ? and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after DINNER
