Stonehenge and Tolkien

This is a spin-off from the "Satanic Mills" thread.

FIRST: Comedian Eddie Izzard says of Stonehenge: "It's one of the biggest henges in the world!" Then he says: before Stonehenge there was (of course) Woodhenge and Strawhenge... but you can image what happened to those.

SECOND: and seriously, before we get too far from the topic of Stonehenge, I have a question for those of you who have read THE LORD OF THE RINGS. There was SOMETHING in one of the books that made me think, "He's describing Stonehenge! He [Tolkien] means that Stonehenge is the last physical remnant of Middle Earth!"

And now I can't remember WHAT made me think that, though I vaguely recall it was the entrance to something.

Does this ring any huge stone bells?
