I hardly dare post in such a cloistered community, but for those that find it funny:

You will be glad to know that my very being is dissolving into waves of pleasure and liquid pearls!

There's some GREAT limericks in The Pearl.....I was amazed !

Sadly, I have not read it, and impossible to find in the library, no doubt. I blame Steinbeck (I sing the song of the morning) for stealing that title.

[tinyurl.com] />
656 pages, cool! I will put it on my 'to purchase' list. I usually try to locate several titles to be ordered at the same time, saving on shipping charges, right.

If you dont already have it, may i recommend the Steinbeck King Arthur if you need to buy something else.

you MUST get The Pearl, Hugh....seriously......it's worth it for the limericks alone !

Johnny, which modernization of the Pearl did you find limericks in, or was it in th ME? Neither of mine (John Gardner and Gordon Hall Gerould) has anything other than 12 lines ababcdcdefef or ababababbcbc for the opening stanza. Maybe I'm thinking of another Pearl.

Let me know.

Here's one for (the missing) Chesil - Coleridge's lost poem, Lewti:

HIDDEN VERSE

Lewti, Or the Circassian Love Chant

At midnight by the stream I rov’d
to forget the form I lov’d
Image of Lewti! from my mind
Depart; for Lewti is not kind.
The moon is high, the moonlight gleam,
And the shadow of a star
Heaves upon Tamaha’s stream;
But yonder rock shines brighter far,
The rock is (?gloss’d) with
moonlight Dew,
Thro’ pendant boughs of
tressy Yew -
Here (?) and there it steals to view
Thro’ pendant boughs of tressy Yew
As bright a gleam and far more soft
There (?plays) from Lewti’s
fore-head oft
From beneath her jetty hair,
The vine like tendrils of her hair,
Thro’ Locks so black and brow so
fair!

Circassian = Caucasian?
Tamaha - in Nigeria? Surely not Oklahoma USA
Prolly not Sammy's best, no.

Searching for related words on a particular poem's topic? Here is a new feature from the OneLook site:

I am not sure why they call it a 'reverse dictionary', but it seems a nice tool to have available.

now THAT I would have no objection to !

except then, you;d lose the meaning of Hugh's excellent Midas line
which would be a shameto lose

This site seems to be a valuable addition for used books searches:

Still no luck with Chance Hits by Norman Chance, though. Ilza has the only remaining copy in existence I fear.
