what makes a poem a poem? how does one define it? one can say a poem has structure or depth or imagery or meaning, but haven't all these ideas been predetermined for us? who decides what poetry is? we should. my question is, how do you, as an individual decide what poetry is? what are your criteria?
It's a poem if I say it is.
(And that's not entirely a joke.)
Wickedgurl, we have discussed this question a great deal on this forum. Do a search for the word "song" and you'll see a lot of discussion of whether song lyrics are poems; that'll give you a start.
As my college profs used to say: "When you find the answer to that question, you can go to Stockholm and collect your Nobel Prize."
Meanwhile, a poem is that which merits discussion on a poetry forum.
