publisher rights

when submitting poetry for publication, what do publishers mean by, "acquires first, reprint, and one-time rights." or "acquires all rights."

Acquires all rights means just that- they own any possibility of selling your poem. Example- Hollywood loves your poem and wants to buy it for a billion dollars to make a movie. You get NONE of that money.

First rights means the right to print your poem before anyone else does. Reprint rights is the right to print it again, such as in an anthology, for NO extra payment.

I don't know about the 'one-time' rights. Try this link for more information, although this applies to American contracts only. [www.asja.org] />

Long history of Adams in my family on mothers side. Do you do family history? Lot of lost poets there.
