REALLY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Keeper of Light (---.texoma.net)
Date: July 21, 2003 04:13PM

Okay, maybe this isn't REALLY IMPORTANT!!!!!! You people need to loosen up a bit. Does anyone have any happy poems? Or perhaps funny?
I am easy to please.

Of course I know what you are thinking, What a psycho. Well you are right. I know most of my poems are sad, or demented, but I really like to read something happy every now and then. Isn't it important to be happy?

Has anyone written anything about bubbles, or rainbows? I find those always make me happy! Of course my brother informed me that rainbows are a little fruity, but who cares. I was informed once that gay means happy. Or at least it used to. So is anyone around here happy?

If not you should be. Of course some of the not so nice people on here will probably tell me that I sould sit on a tack or something like that, but I am trying to make happy people!

Then again I know that most of you probably are happy people just like me. Okay, maybe not just like me, but you are happy nonetheless. I only want you to prove it.

Please, if you have nothing nice to say on this one, don't say it! That will only make me so much more happier.

Post your feelings here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps I am a sadly confused person? I'm sure that many of you agree with me. I guess if you only have mean things to say you should say those too. I am not picky. I will love you regardless!

Smiles all around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if this would fit the bill but I like it!

My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

William Wordsworth

Another possibility is "Pippa's Song" from "Pippa Passes" by Browning

The year's at the spring
The day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn:
God's in his heaven -
All's right with the world.

Well-known but (for me at any rate) comforting! L.

The elephant is a pretty bird
It flits from bough to bough.
It makes its nest in a rhubarb tree
And whistles like a cow.

Ogden Nash, I think.

The Front of Me

The front of me is what you can see
The back of me is where my front used to be
The side of me is here and here
That's not including of course my rear.

The top of me is a head with hair
The bottom of me is way down there
But inside my head there sits a brain
Which works i'm afraid only now and again..
Pity.

Keeper of Light,

Here's one I wrote that you might like.

When the Circus Comes to Town

All the kids will sure be running
From every part of town,
There'll be laughs and shouts aplenty
When the circus comes to town.

A marching band will hit the street,
The calliope will sound.
Everyone will hear it
When the circus comes to town.

There'll be elephants and lions
With acrobats and clowns,
Lots of fun for everybody
When the circus comes to town.

There'll be bales of cotton candy
And peanuts by the pound,
Corn dogs on a wooden stick
When the circus comes to town.

Oh Mama, is it bed-time yet?
Please turn my covers down.
I want to wake up early
When the circus comes to town.

One of the happiest poems I know. It never fails to cheer me up when I feel down.

In the Poppy Field

Mad Patsy said, he said to me,
That every morning he could see
An angel walking on the sky;
Across the sunny skies of morn
He threw great handfuls far and nigh
Of poppy seed among the corn;
And then, he said, the angels run
To see the poppies in the sun.

A poppy is a devil weed,
I said to him - he disagreed;
He said the devil had no hand
In spreading flowers tall and fair
Through corn and rye and meadow land,
by garth and barrow everywhere:
The devil has not any flower,
But only money in his power.

And then he stretched out in the sun
And rolled upon his back for fun:
He kicked his legs and roared for joy
Because the sun was shining down:
He said he was a little boy
And would not work for any clown:
He ran and laughed behind a bee,
And danced for very ecstasy.

James Stephens (1882-1950)

Okay, "Keeper" -- I'll bite.

WHAT IS WITH THIS SLOGAN OF YOURS, "THE LIGHT IS SLOWLY GOING OUT" ???

You wrote on another thread that Ecclesiastes is an important book for you, and (as you know) one of the messages there is that the light always APPEARS to be going out and coming back again, and the secret of a good life is to remember that it's a cycle so that you don't despair in the darkness, NOR get overconfident during the bright times.

If you feel called to be a "Keeper of the Light"--hey, I'm all for it! But adding that slogan seems to indicate that you don't think you're doing a very good job.

SO - WHAT'S THE DEAL???

How about Newman Levy? Absolute control of rhythm, great rhyme schemes, I don't know whether to hate him or marry him! Try a Google search on his name for more examples.

pam

Thais
--Newman Levy

One time in Alexandria, in wicked Alexandria
Where nights were wild with revelry and life was but a game,
There lived, so the report is, an adventuress and courtesan
The pride of Alexandria, and Thais was her name.

Nearby, in peace and piety, avoiding all society
There dwelt a band of holy men who'd made their refuge there,
And in the desert's solitude, they spurned all earthly folly to
Devote their lives to holy works, to fasting and to prayer.

Now one monk whom I solely mention of this band of holy men
Was known as Athaneal, he was famous near and far.
At fasting bouts and prayer, with him, none other could compare with him,
At plain and fancy praying he could do the course in par.

One day while sleeping heavily, from wresting with the Devil he
Had gone to bed exhausted, though the sun was shining still
He had a vision Freudian, and though he was annoyed, he an-
Alyzed it in the well-known style of Doctors Jung and Brill.

He dreamed of Alexandria, of wicked Alexandria.
A crowd of men was cheering in a manner rather rude.
And Athaneal glancing there at THAIS, who was dancing there
Observed her do the shimmy, in what artists call The Nude!

Said he,"This dream fantastical disturbs my thoughts monastical,
Some unsuppressed desire, I fear, has found my monkish cell.
I blushed up to the hat o' me to view that girl's anatomy
I'll go to Alexandria and save her soul from Hell!"

So, pausing not to wonder where he'd put his winter underwear
He quickly packed his evening clothes, a toothbrush and a vest
To guard against exposure he threw in some woolen hosiery
And bidding all the boys Adieu, he started on his quest.

The monk, though warned and fortified was deeply shocked and mortified,
To find, on his arrival, wild debauchery in sway.
While some were in a stupor, sent by booze of more than two percent,
The rest were all behaving in a most immoral way.

Said he to Thais, "Pardon me. Although this job is hard on me,
I've got to put you straight to what I came out here to tell:
What's all this boozin' gettin' you? Cut out this pie-eyed retinue,
Let's hit the road together, kid, and save your soul from Hell!"

Although this bold admonishment caused Thais some astonishment,
She quickly answered,"Say! You said a heaping mouthful, Bo!
This burg's a frost, I'm telling you. The brand of hooch they're selling you
Ain't like the stuff you used to get, so let's pack up and go!"

So off from Alexandria, from wicked Alexandria
Across the desert sands they go, beneath the burning sun.
Till Thais, parched and sweltering, finds refuge in the sheltering
Seclusion of a convent in the habit of a nun.

And now the monk is terrified to find his fears are verified
His holy vows of chastity have cracked beneath the strain!
Like one who has a jag on, he cries out in grief and agony
"I'd sell my soul to see her do the shimmy once again!"

Alas! His pleadings amorous, though passionate and clamorous
Have come too late. The courtesan has danced her final dance.
Said he,"Now that's a joke on me, for that there dame to croak on me,
I never should have passed her up the time I had a chance!"

Hmmmmm. Just what I was thinking. There's something strangely disconcerting about a request to lighten up and provide happy stuff and then finding at the end of each requestor message--the light is slowly dying out.

Laughing is my favorite hobby...nothing better than a good loud laughing spell, Keepersmiling smiley. In regards to the above comments; I liked your old signature better, "I'll keep a light on for you" or something similar...there's enough darkness in this world already, and even the tinest candle can be seen for miles away. Besides, if the light went out I'd miss your poetry dreadfully...
Sharing my motto with you:
Laugh like you have no cares, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like nobody's watching.

Keep smiling,
Desire

Marian - The original Thais story - where do I find it? You've obviously met it before. I tried googling a couple of days ago, got inundated with info about people from Thailand also various . . . um . . . exotic dancers and similar (blush) and couldn't sort out anything pertinent from the results.

Try typing it Tha´s (the 'i' is made with ALT0239 - hold down the Alt key and type 0239 on the numeric keyboard):

[www.google.com] />
Levy did a lot of fantastic 'opera' and 'theatre' poems, available at online used bookstores for very reasonable prices. Slim tomes, more's the pity.

Re: THAIS

I know the story of Thais from the OPERA "Tha´s" by Jules Massenet. The opera is not as well known as one of the instrumental pieces it contains. The "Meditation from Tha´s" is a favorite, especially for violin and flute soloists. It's a lovely, soaring melody meant to depict some of the soul-searching that happens between the acts of the opera.

An on-line search tell me this much:

Composer: Jules Massenet
Librettist: Louis Gallet
Source: Tha´s, novel by Anatole France

... but I don't know what kind of myth-legend material was available to Anatole France.

I found this title: "Kuehne: A Study of the Tha´s Legend with Special Reference to Hrotsvitha's Paphnutius (Coffman)" but the pdf file attached is too blurry to read, so I don't know what to make of it. It's at:
[gallica.bnf.fr] /> if you want to have a bash.

Illegible, as you say, even saving it to disk and re-opening it. Google has some links, for example the one below (only available in its cache, so hopefully the link will work correctly):

[216.239.51.104] />

"Hrotsvitha

The play you are going to read this week belongs to the medieval dramas of the nun Hrotsvitha. Her name is also sometimes spelled Roswitha or Hrotsuit. Hrotsvitha was born around the year 935 and died sometime after 970 (perhaps as late as 1002) in Gandersheim Germany where she was the abbess of the Benedictine nunnery (Gandersheim is a village in Lower Saxony, central Germany, near G÷ttingen).

Hrotsvitha's plays are the first dramas known to have been written by a woman. Although the plays are on Christian themes, Hrotsvitha shows a knowledge of classical Latin literature and uses a simple but artful style (with a great deal of rhyming). She was familiar with the Roman comedies of Terence and writes about her indebtedness to this Roman model, as well as her ambition to create Christian dramas based on this pagan model. In addition to her plays, Hrotsvitha wrote several lives of the saints in verse and other religious poetry.

(...)

In Paphnutius, the central female character is Thais, a prostitute and agent of the devil who is redeemed by the ascetic practices imparted to her by the holy man Paphnutius. The play Abraham also deals with the motif of a fallen woman redeemed by a holy man's piety; in this case, the holy man is the woman's father. "

There's the wonderful love of a beautiful maid,
And the love of a staunch true man,
And thel ove of a baby that's unafraid--
All have existed since time began.
But the most wonderful love, the Love of all loves,
Even greater than love for Mother,
Is the infinite, tenderest, passionate love
Of one dead drunk for another.

I know it's just the structure of that last poem that's reminded me of this one, but hey, it's not widely known, so why not share?

And at the End

Once on a dewy morning
With the bright sky blowing apart
Each bud broke on my eyelids
Each bird flew through my heart
I prayed for the faith of a starling
Under the tawny trees
A child or a holy woman
What could be greater than these ?

But now on a heavy morning
With the dull sky blowing apart
No flower blesses my eyelids
No wing brushes my heart
I, made surer by sorrow
Beg what seems more to me
The faith of a willow in winter
Or a blind hound nosing the knee.

The Irish Pig

'Twas an evening in November,
As I very well remember.
I was strolling down the street in drunken pride,
But my knees were all aflutter,
So I landed in the gutter,
And a pig came up a lay down by my side.
Yes, I lay there in the gutter
Thinking thoughts I could not utter,
When a colleen passing by did softly say,
"You can tell a man that boozes
By the company he chooses."
At that the pig got up and walked away!

REALLY SILLY!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Henry (213.78.100.---)
Date: August 07, 2003 03:32PM

Then I started in to mutter and I rose up from the gutter,
Then I sadly went about my lonely way;
I was weary, sick and busted; I was really quite disgusted,
And I vowed to sign the pledge that very day.
For each humble, lowly creature, a great lesson he can teach ya,
Like the one learned while I in the gutter lay;
In the tavern, do not tarry, when you've got all you can carry,
But take up your load and slowly walk away.
